Adding Mulch Around the House

I've never like mulch. Too landscaped and new looking. I prefer it to look like it did 100 years ago, but we have company coming at the end of the month (about 50 people) and to make it look nicer(more what other people think looks nice), we've added mulch to give our plants a finished look. We still have a little painting to do-but what's been done so far is looking great. I still need to rearrange the porch a little.

Vanhoute spirea in the front which we've trimmed back, but could use it some more.

The front left side next to the porch where the annabelle hydrangeas grow. A corner around the house where the water hose is. I've always had problems getting anything to grow here!

  2. I feel the same way you do about mulch; for me it's a little TOO manicured. Plus it's a pain in the neck to keep looking nice.

But we did the same thing before our daughter's wedding -- had mulch installed in front of the house, and along the driveway.

And what happened? 3 days before the wedding, torrential rains washed the mulch off the driveway slope, across the pavement, and under the hedges! Complete mess.

With an old house, sometimes it's just better to stick to the old ways!

  4. love all the annabelle's! Place looks great. Love how it sits on that knoll all by itself and the trees and that great fence. Your place is what so many people dream of......
